Abolition: starting now!

Our South Coast Relay will be part of an initiative by Abolition 2000, a global network to abolish nuclear weapons. It will raise awareness of the crucial Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in May 2010. The leaders of 186 countries will meet in a time of renewed hope for the global abolition of nuclear weapons. President Obama has pledged to work seriously for the abolition of all nuclear weapons everywhere. Many military and political leaders have spoken out for this too. We can add our voice to this burgeoning call for freedom from the nuclear menace.

Our relay will highlight the fact that nuclear weapons could never be used lawfully and that all states have an obligation to start, and bring to a conclusion, negotiations for their global abolition This is what the World Court decreed and this is our demand.

During the relay we shall collect photographs, comments and video clips from the people taking part. We shall take several copies of a booklet recording the relay to present to key diplomats at the Review Conference. Our material will also form part of an exhibition inside the United Nations building which will display the demand for the abolition of nuclear weapons from people all over the world.

You can join in just one of the days of the relay to carry the Flame. You can do it on foot, or by bike. Or you could run. You could take part for only a part of the relay. Or you could just be there on one of the days on the South Coast when the Flame is handed over.
