Eastbourne’s Flame
of Hope
Peace walkers welcome the
Flame of Hope
AN Olympic-style flame has travelled through Eastbourne carried by peace walkers who want world leaders to abolish nuclear weapons.
The Flame of Hope was welcomed to the town by mayor Cllr Greg Szanto and three of the town's election candidates, Nigel Waterson, Stephen Lloyd and Stephen Shing.
The candidates and mayor saw  peace walkers off from the pier last Tuesday (April 6).
All four made speeches in support of a Flame of Hope for the abolition of nuclear weapons.
The party, including a cyclist and two dogs, climbed up Beachy Head, passed the Seven Sisters to Birling   Gap, then on to Cuckmere Haven and on to Seaford.
This was part of a long journey  along the south coast which started     off from Dover on Easter Saturday.      It finished in Portsmouth eight days later, on Sunday (April 11).
The flame will now continue to New York. There it will join flames from other parts of the world, including Hiroshima. Organisers hope these flames send a message to the world leaders from 186 countries who will gather for talks about nuclear weapons. They want world leaders to abolish all nuclear weapons immediately.
